Darren Wrack insists he would not have signed for Kettering Town if he believed they would simply be making up the numbers in the Blue Square Premier next season.
The 32-year-old midfielder became manager Mark Cooper's third summer signing yesterday having been released by Coca-Cola League One side Walsall at the end of last season.

That brought an end to a 10-year stay at the Bescot Stadium where Wrack made nearly 400 appearances – including over 40 in last season's
campaign for the Saddlers.

His arrival at the Blue Square North champions may come as a surprise to many.

But he insists Cooper's enthusiasm and the fact that he feels Kettering are a club going places convinced him to drop down to non-League
football.

"It is a deal that my agent and Mark had been working on for a while and I came down to meet Mark and he sold the club to me," Wrack said.

"He has ambition and it matched my own so we were both more than happy with what we discussed.

"Dropping down was a decision I had to make. But it's one I am
comfortable with otherwise I wouldn't have done it.

"I liked what I heard and it seems the club is going places and I want
to be a part of that.

"It's not always about playing in the Football League. This move is good for me and I think we can achieve things.

"I have plenty of experience. But I am not going to big myself up. I am here to do a job and I can't wait to get on with it."

The new season will provide a stern test for the Poppies as they look to make the step-up.

But Wrack believes the team spirit and winning mentality from the last campaign will help.

He added: "They won the league by a landslide last season and they have some good players here.

"We are not just going to be in there next season to make up the numbers.

"I wouldn't be here if that was the case.

"I have heard about the team spirit here and if we take that ethic into the new season then we won't have many problems."

Former Poppies keeper Mark Osborn, meanwhile, has signed for Corby Town. Click here to read more.
