Ex-chief superintendent Andy Dickson has been given permission to attempt the swim between midnight and next Saturday.
However, bad weather has delayed the start.
Mr Dickson, who spent 30 years in the force, many of those working in Wellingbo
rough, is now waiting for a call from his swimming team with the news he can start the challenge.
Once he gets the call he will set off for Dover for the swim, which is expected to take 16 hours to complete.
Mr Dickson said: "I have been training for two years to do this.
"We could get a call at any moment telling us that it's all on, so we are on tenterhooks.
"All we are waiting for is the right weather conditions but the forecast does not look too good so who knows when we will get the go-ahead.
"I am nervous but everything is in place."
He is hoping to raise more than £2,000 for two county charities – Thomas's Fund, a charity providing music therapy for children who are too ill to go to school, and Favell House, a hospice in Northampton.
